SBCNY Fellow Spotlights
Jayanth Krishnan Jayanth Krishnan, currently enrolled in the Accelerated Physician-Scientist Program (BS/MD) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College, is a recipient of a 2011 Davidson Scholarship. Jay, who conducted research under the mentorship of SBCNY Investigator Avi Ma'ayan, was the winner in the Engineering category at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF). His project was selected as one of the top eight overall projects which earned him a trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

Johnson Ho Johnson Ho, City College of New York, Biomedical Engineering major, received the 2011 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and was selected as the 2011-2012 Valedictorian of the Grove School of Engineering. Johnson was a summer 2009 SBCNY Fellow who worked under the mentorship of Kevin Costa (MSSM, Department of Medicine) on a project titled: Post-Infarction Left Ventricular Remodeling and the Law of Laplace.

Jayanth Krishnan Sara Wildstein from Queens College (Class of 2010), was one of the recipients of the 2010 Jonas E. Salk Scholarship. She is currently a medical student at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Under the mentorship of SBCNY Investigator Eric Sobie during the summer of 2009, Sara's project was titled: Computational modeling of 'leaky' ryanodine receptors and triggered arrhythmias in heart cells.

Education Outreach

Training of Visiting Educators and Students
SBCNY outreach activities include opportunities for educators as well as students who are high school through graduate school levels.

Winter - Spring 2011 - Visiting Undergraduate Educators

Ahmet Ay PhD, Assistant Professor of Biology and Mathematics at Colgate University spent a week visiting the Center for hands-on training with gene-list enrichment analysis software tools: Genes2Networks and Lists2Networks. Dr. Ay teaches undergraduates at Colgate University in the area of systems biology and wants to incorporate the tools into the curriculum.

Winter - Spring 2011 - Visiting Graduate Students
Valentina Barbieri is a visiting PhD student in the Iyengar Laboratory from the University of Milan Bicocca, Italy. Her current project consists of the development of a dynamical model of the Gq protein signaling pathway in order to shed light on the spatial and temporal relationships between regulatory motifs and the activity states of transcription factors involved in the network.

Summer 2010 - Visiting High School Students
Jay Krishnan from Mahopac High School (Mahopac, NY) continued working on his research project from the previous summer in the Ma'ayan Laboratory. A brief description of Jay's project, Regulatory Signatures of Cancer Cell Lines Inferred from Expression Data is available on the SBCNY Fellows Summer 2010 page here. In March 2011, Jay placed first in the bioengineering-category of the WESEF (Westchester Science and Engineering Fair) competition.

Summer 2009 - Visiting Undergraduate Educators
Urszula Golebiewska PhD, Assistant Professor, Queensborough Community College, extended her research experience in the laboratory of Suzanne Scarlata PhD, a SBCNY Investigator, over the summer. Her research projects in the lab include studies of phosphoinositol 3 kinase; where it is located in the cell and how it is regulated by G proteins.

Summer 2009 - Visiting K-12 Educators

Jaak Raudsepp, a biochemistry teacher from Northport High School (Northport, NY), spent 6 weeks in the Scarlata Laboratory in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Stony Brook University Medical Center. During this time, he learned about the parameters that determine how strongly proteins interact and the methods used to monitor these interactions. He now has hands-on experiences that he can share with his students.

Summer 2009 - Visiting High School Students
In the summer of 2009, SBCNY Investigator Avi Ma'ayan PhD mentored two high-school students from the New York area: Nabil Ahmed and Jay Krishnan. Their projects resulted in applications to the Intel Science Talent Search competition. Additionally, an abstract that resulted from Nabil Ahmed's project was submitted and accepted to the RECOMB 2009 Conference. Jay Krishnan continued working on his research project and returned to the Center in the summer of 2010. Summer 2008 - Visiting Graduate Students
Sarwar Jamal Mohammmad, a graduate student in the laboratory of Professor Kanury Rao at ICGEB (International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology) in New Delhi, India visited the Systems Biology Center New York on Wednesday July 23, 2008. The purpose of the visit was to spend a day learning the detailed protocol for the Panomics protein-DNA arrays to profile transcription factor activation. Jamal's project is to understand the global role of transcriptional control in G1 arrest in B cells that have been presented with antigen. His goal is to link up the upstream signaling network in B cells with the microarray data. We provided him with a detailed protocol and will continue to provide advice on as-needed basis.
